About Us

“Nguvu" means 'Power' in Swahili. Our name, Nguvu Collective, is inspired by our fundamental conviction: the power of a collective of women Change Leaders to make big, long-lasting changes in how things work.

Our Origin

2017

Our journey began with She Creates Change, our flagship women’s leadership program, in Asia. Incubated within the Change.org Foundation, we enabled 400 women, mostly from marginalised communities, to emerge as powerful Change Leaders who advocate for their communities. They successfully ran social change impactful campaigns that impacted the lives of millions of people.

2020

Buoyed by  the success of She Creates Change in South Asia, we launched the program in Africa..We also piloted an approach tailored to Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, with a  program called We Create Change, which has empowered hundreds of change leaders to create lasting impact.

2023

After six years of incubation of a successful full-scale project and three pilots in Africa, our flagship programs took a new direction  by becoming an independent organisation called Nguvu Collective.

Our commitment is to build collectives of women and non-binary change leaders that drive  large-scale social impact, shift power and make systemic changes.

Our Vision

Our Vision is to create a world where more women are in positions of social power and leadership,  driving systemic change for their communities and countries through the strength of their collectives.

Our Purpose is to facilitate movement-ready collectives of women Change Leaders from marginalised communities in the global south that create large-scale social impact, shift conventional power and drive systemic changes.

Our Values

Collective is the real Power

Action is more powerful when it is led by groups of emerging leaders with lived experience of systemic injustice. We support the collective to step into their power—trusting them to lead; facilitating collaboration and backing them when things are tough.

We are Courageous

Courage requires us to face our challenges and fears; and keep moving forwards. We work with transformative leaders who want to shift power. We match this ambition by taking bold actions and driving results.

We are Playful

Systemic change is most sustainable when we build relationships, trust each other and have fun. We actively look for playfulness and joy in our work.

We love what we do and we show it!

Prioritise the Marginalised

Our work is in service of communities that are marginalised. We are building our team and practices so that everyone who works with us feels valued, respected and impactful.

We are Open

We believe that social change emerges through collective effort.

We build trust by sharing decisions and learnings openly; and by taking responsibility for our actions.
